Song of the Week
6/17/10 - "Solar Miracle Make-Up"
In Memoriam Kanbe Miyuki 5/7/84 - 6/18/08![]()
"Fan: Of the musical songs, which is your favorite one?
Host: What is your favorite song Sailor Moon?
Kanbe Miyuki: I think my favorite is Solar Miracle Makeup since it's the most 'genki.' I li-ke it."--Last Dracul Jokyoku Fankan Question Corner, 2000
Tomorrow is June 18, the 2-year anniversary of the day Kanbe Miyuki, the third SeraMyu Sailor Moon actress, passed away suddenly from heart failure. She was only 24 years old, the same age I was when I heard of it. So, to honor her memory, the Song of the Week this week is her favorite myu song, "Solar Miracle Make-Up."
"Solar Miracle Make-Up" debuted in the second musical, Sailor Moon S - Usagi Ai no Senshi e no Michi. It also appeared in Sailor Moon S -Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi- (the '95 Winter musical, which was never released on video), Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban), Kaguya Shima Densetsu, and interestingly enough Last Dracul Jokyoku, the same musical during whose fankan Miyuki-san said it was her favorite song (see quote above). It also appears on the Best Songs Collection CD. Just as Miyuki-san says, it's a very genki (energetic) song, sung initially by the Inner Senshi, though in Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban), Kaguya and Last Dracul it is sung by the Inners, Outers, and Chibimoon. While in the second musical it's just the opening song, in Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban), Kaguya and Last Dracul, it's a battle song, used in battles against Galaxia and her minions, Dark Plasman and the vampires respectively. I'm not sure why they didn't use it as a battle song in the second musical. But the second musical did make some interesting use of flies (those cords they attach to you in stage shows so you can literally "fly" across the stage) during this song, which makes it still cool.
I think this song is cool, though I confess it's not my favorite. I actually fandubbed it last year to put up on June 18 in honor of the 1st anniversary of Miyuki-san's death, but it was deleted when my old backup account was deleted. I think I may try to redo it for tomorrow though. It is a fun song to sing at any rate. And definitely very genki.
That's all for this week. Miyuki-san, rest in peace. Tune in next Thursday to see the next Song of the Week!
