6/10/10 - "Sailor War Supreme"
For the very belated first Song of the Week, I'm going to review a song I've been trying to learn myself so I can fandub it - "Sailor War Supreme."
This song first appeared in the 1996 musical Sailor Stars, which was also the first musical to feature the Starlights. It also appeared in 1997's Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban) and in 2003's Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu. It is the only song I know of in the myus that features all the senshi - the Starlights included - singing at one time (although technically it's not all, since Chibi-Moon isn't there, but she wasn't there in Stars anyway), other than full cast numbers. It's also one of the few songs in the myus where you have multiple groups singing different things at one time. The only others are "Triple Dreams" from the SuperS myus and Shin Densetsu Kourin, "We'll Be the Last Victory" from Transylvania no Mori, and "Triangle Secret" from the Mugen myus.
I have to say, this is one heck of a song. You have 12 different senshi in it, for goodness' sake. Its melody is primarily that of "Sailor War," but it also incorporates bits from "Chasin' After You," "Fukkatsu! Crisis Yurusumaji," "Stay Alone" and "To a Brand-New World," although the lyrics are different in each case (except for "Chasin' After You"). This incorporation works pretty well, at least until the second part of the song. For that part, the only part I can really make out well is the Starlights' part, maybe because theirs is the main bit. The Inner Senshi and Outer Senshi's parts are considerably more difficult to distinguish. This is true to an extent for "Triangle Secret" also - in that one the Hoshinos' part is hard to hear at the end when everyone sings together. I guess if you're just watching the song or listening to it, such minor things don't matter, but for fandubbing it's quite a nuisance.
Still, this is a great song and worth a listen. There are a lot of versions of "Sailor War," but in a way this one reigns supreme (pardon the pun).
