9/23/10 - "L'amour D'Amour Moonlight"
Hello again and welcome to Song of the Week! This week, since I just watched and wrote a review of the second musical, I'm featuring one of my favorite songs from that myu, "L'amour D'Amour Moonlight."
"L'amour D'Amour Moonlight" is interesting first of all for its title. While one often sees English sprinkled into Japanese songs -- even modern-day j-pop -- seeing other foreign languages is not as common, though French seems to be more common than others. (The fact that one of the most popular j-pop bands among Western fans is called L'Arc~en~Ciel, which means "rainbow" in French, is one indication of this). But in SeraMyu, French is used almost as often as English in songs, and "L'amour D'amour Moonlight" (which translates to "Love of love Moonlight," with "L'Amour D'Amour" written out in French in the kanji lyrics and "moonlight" simply written in katakana) is the first of these songs to appear in this myus. It would later appear in songs like "Orleans no Sei Senshi" and its soundalike "La Fatalité Sei Senshi" as well as Vampir's solo "Image de mon Père." (Actually, French is used elsewhere in Sailor Moon music as well, with one whole CD – Sailor Moon SuperS in Paris – being devoted to it).
"L'amour D'Amour Moonlight" first appeared in the second musical, but also appeared, like many other musical 2 songs, in Last Dracul Jokyoku as well as in the unreleased '95 Winter musical. It was also used as a service number for Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban). It then appeared at the Final First Stage fankan and Last Dracul Jokyoku Fankan, on the Final First Stage LD Omake (which gave a countdown of the top 10 myu songs; the version of "L'Amour D'Amour Moonlight" shown is the service number version from Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban)), on Ongaku Shuu (Music Collection) volumes 1 and 2, and as part of both Best Songs Medleys (the 2001 and 2002 versions). As for CDs, it appeared on the soundtracks for musicals 2 and 8, naturally, but also appeared on the CD Theme Songs 1993-1999 and on the first Eternal Edition CD in karaoke form only.
I really like this song, and not just cause of the French in the title (I'm a French minor and thus a little too into the language, which is why I went to the trouble to bore you with the long paragraph about the use of French in the myus). The dance moves are pretty cool too. Plus, I like singing it. It's fun. I get more into it than into "La Soldier." (Sorry).
