Song of the Week
7/1/10 - "Knockin' Down Hesitation"

Anza singing 'Knockin' Down Hesitation' at the special 777th Show

Welcome once again to Song of the Week! This week's song is "Knockin' Down Hesitation." I know, you're probably all saying to yourselves, "is she ever going to stop picking songs from the First Stage?" Yes I probably will. Bear with me.

"Knockin' Down Hesitation" is a fun song by Usagi with the Three Lights as her backup dancers, the context being that she is performing for a school music festival. Like many myu songs, especially upbeat ones, bits of English are sprinkled liberally throughout (and even the title is English). It first appeared in a short version done in the 1996 Summer musical Sailor Stars, then in a longer "extended" version (with a second verse, bridge, and chorus) in its revision, Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban).

An interesting tidbit though...did you know this song has been performed in all four stages? That's right! It debuted with Anza, of course, and she sang it not only in the aforesaid musicals, but even came back and sang it for the 777th myu performance, a special performance of Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin - The Second Stage Final where a number of special guests (including Anza) showed up to celebrate the performance milestone. It was performed during the Fumina era by Takagi Nao (in a Three Lights outfit no less) at the 1999 Golden Week fankan (which can be seen briefly during the Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) omake video). Miyuki sang it during the Transylvania no Mori fankan, which can be seen briefly on the Guide Video for that musical. Marina sang it both in a musical (Ankoku no Princess Black Lady (Kaiteiban)) and along with Anza at the 777th show. Pretty cool, huh?

I have to say this song is becoming a favorite with me. Even with the crazy dancing and light effects and Usagi's rather strange outfit in the original performance (the Black Lady performance is better in this respect; in that one Usagi and the other Inners singing the song are all wearing crop T-shirts with jeans, along with cropped jackets), it's a very catchy song. *sings* Knockin' Down Hesitation, sora ni toki hanate Revolution, Positive ni ikeba That's all right...okay I'll stop now.

That's all for this week. Tune in next Thursday to see the next Song of the Week!
