Song of the Week
9/16/10 - "Welcome Hare Hare Hire Hare"

Leah Ruby-tachi sing 'Welcome Hare Hare Hire Hare'

Once again, here is a belated Song of the Week. I swear, these long school days are putting me off track! (I didn't even do a feature last week!) Anyway, this week's song is a fun and kinda nonsensical song from Kaguya Shima Densetsu and its Kaiteiban, "Welcome Hare Hare Hire Hare."

This song is sung by Leah Ruby, Bilhah Emerald, Zilpah Sapphire, and Dark Menorah, the sort of sub-villains to Dark Plasman in this musical, as a way of welcoming Usagi and company to Kaguya Island. It more or less describes how great the island is, with its white sand, blue sea, and bright sun, and tells all the activities the group has planned for Usagi and her friends. The music has a very stereotypical-Hawaiian feel, like the kind of music you'd hear at some tropical tourist trap (Leah-tachi are even wearing Hawaiian outfits). Of course, at this point, Usagi and the others have no idea of Leah-tachi's real plans for them; they just think how lucky they are that they found a place that's not only good for their Senshi training (which was the whole reason they were initially going to take this trip) but also a tropical paradise.

The main feature of this song is the rather nonsensical refrain of "Hare Hare Hire Hare Keruparu Haa, Hare Hare Hire Hare Haa." I haven't the slightest idea what language that is supposed to be. It probably is, as I have said, just nonsensical (though in the Japanese lyrics it's written out in katakana, the writing used for foreign words in Japanese). At any rate, it's a fun song; Inada Nao, the 7th and 3rd-longest-running Sailor Venus, named it as her favorite song from the musicals. It was never performed at any fankan, however, and only appeared on one CD, the soundtrack for Kaguya Shima Densetsu. It was also unfortunately cut from the revised Kaguya myus of 2004 and 2005. This is probably due to a plot change where Loof Mellow and her crew (who are focused on more in the Shin Kaguya myus) are the ones to welcome Usagi and the others to the island. The new song used is one called "Toraware no Artuka" ("Artuka Captured"), which is presented as a traditional song of the island, much like "Welcome Hare Hare Hire Hare" was, and also has a semi-nonsensical refrain ("Rai Ra Rarai Tura," which Miss Dream translates as "L-l-light auras"). But it's not as fun and silly as its predecessor.

Well, that's all for this week. Tune in next Thursday (hopefully) to see the next Song of the Week!
