Shin Densetsu Kourin Fankan

New Sailor Moon Hara Fumina sings Moon's solo from 'La Soldier'

Shin Densetsu Kourin translates to "Beginning of a New Legend," and in a way, that name is very appropriate, since it not only started a new stage but also featured an almost completely new cast, including a new Sailor Moon, played by Hara Fumina. It all began with the 1998 Golden Week Fan Kansha event, the first of six SeraMyu fankans to happen during Golden Week (a special week from the end of April to the beginning of May during which several Japanese holidays fall).

The fankan for Shin Densetsu Kourin was released as the VHS omake for the musical. The fankan begins with a 1-chorus performance of the musicals' quintessential song, "La Soldier." This is followed by cast introductions. This fankan debuts a lot of new people, as aforesaid, including Fumina, fan favorite Takagi Nao as Uranus, and Anza's little sister Chiho as Sailor Jupiter. Only Ono Hikari (Hawk's Eye) and Mochizuki Yuuta (King Endymion) are carryovers from the First Stage.

Then the new Outers -- Takagi Nao (Uranus), Shimada Sara (Neptune), Kamiya Yuki (Pluto), and Sanpei Asami (Saturn) -- introduce their new group song, "Kokoro Tabanete Makin' for the Right," which they announce is the first song sung by all four Outers together. Shimada-san says she's going to do her best to not lose with this "extremely cool song," and Sanpei-san says the song is too cool. It does a good job of showcasing these new Outers' talents.

The original Starlights make an appearance; here they sing 'Chasin' After You'

Then Nao, Sara, and Asami attempt the Starlights' unique snap routine (but fail to pull it off) to introduce the original Starlights, who make a special appearance together at this fankan (and who, with their short haircuts, actually resemble the Three Lights). Active cast member Hikari-san is joined by her fellow Starlights Katayama Sayuri and Okuyama Momoko (credited as special guests) for yet another fun experience with the queens of adlibbing and audience interaction. The trio sing their theme songs "Chasin' After You" and "See Me, Boku-tachi no Jidai" and even treat us to another round of the special Kinmoku "catch the culprit" game. Since this is the last time Sayuri-san ever appears at a myu fan event – and the last time the original Starlights ever perform together – it is a rare experience and worth a watch.

The Starlights' reunion is interrupted by the arrival of Mochizuki Yuuta as King Endymion, who Hikari-san greets as "King-san" (since she, unlike the others, knows what role he is currently playing). He thanks the Starlights for their efforts. Then he sings "Tuxedo Loyal," Tuxedo Kamen's theme song from the SuperS myus. He then introduces himself and interacts with the Starlights a bit before introducing the new Tuxedo Kamen, Enomoto Yuuta. They then do a "double 'Tuxedo Mission'," as Mochizuki-san calls it. It's quite interesting seeing them side by side, particularly since Enomoto-san is 17 here and Mochizuki-san is 31 (almost twice Enomoto-san's age). They are very in sync though, particularly with the cape movements and the dance-fighting. Enomoto-san is initially out of breath when he tries to introduce himself (and also apologetic about dropping his stick during the song), but then manages to catch his breath and properly introduce himself. Mochizuki-san points out that this is a "double Yuutas show," since both he and Enomoto-san have the given name "Yuuta." Enomoto-san then asks Mochizuki-san what they are supposed to do, and Mochizuki-san says they are supposed to talk. Enomoto-san asks Mochizuki-san to ask him questions, and Mochizuki-san asks him if there's anything he wants to do with "heart's endurance." Enomoto-san mentions Tuxedo Kamen's new song, "Miracle Twister," but when Mochizuki-san asks him if he wants to perform it, Enomoto-san refuses because he says the song can't debut yet. Enomoto-san then comments that Tuxedo Kamen seems weak, to which Mochizuki-san replies that it's forbidden to say that. Mochizuki-san then says that Tuxedo Kamen is actually strong, but he hides his strength to "to [make] Sailor Moon look better."

The first 'Passing of the Tiara'

We then go to the first Passing of the Tiara, an event that occurs at the first fankan of every Sailor Moon actress after Anza where the departing Moon actress passes on her Moon tiara (or Princess Tiara I think in one case) to her successor. Anza and Fumina chat for a bit before the actual passing happens, during which Fumina says she's going to try hard to be as good as her idol Anza. Once Anza gets the tiara, she says lots of "sweat, blood, and ego" went into this tiara. Then, with a fanfare and some special lighting effects, she presents Fumina with the tiara and wishes her luck. Anza then tells the fans to cheer for Fumina before leaving, and Fumina tells Anza she will cherish the tiara.

After handing the tiara off to a stagehand for safekeeping, Fumina introduces a new Usagi/Mamoru song for Shin Densetsu Kourin, "Shadow on My Sweet Memories." After beginning the song with some dialogue that I hadn't heard before, she begins singing the song - quite well, I must say. People bash Fumina's voice in general and her performance in Shin Densetsu Kourin in particular, but I personally think this is one of her best songs. Also, Enomoto-san joins in the song for the Mamoru parts, naturally.

A whip sound is heard, and the Amazon Trio (Queen Beryl's resurrected assistants this time around) appear, chasing Fumina off the stage. This introduces to the fans the new Tiger's Eye and Fish Eye, Mimatsu Akihito and Ichige Midori. They do a good job being in character, with Mimatsu-san capturing all of the effeminate flair of Kasahara Ryuuji's Tiger's Eye from the SuperS myus. While Tiger's Eye and Fish Eye were recast, Ono Hikari reprises her Hawk's Eye role from SuperS Kaiteiban (which was also her debut role in the myus). They then sing the Trio's theme song, "Amazon Kara Circus Dan ga Yatte Kita," with some minor lyric changes from the original.

Then, as the curtain closes behind them for a set change, the three Amazon Trio actors introduce themselves. They then begin to launch into the chorus of the song they just sang but then Mimatsu-san stops them. Then Mimatsu-san asks Hikari-san about "Ono Pikari" (the name she introduced herself as when she appeared as Taiki earlier) and Hikari-san tries to weasel her way out of answering. As they talk, Ichige-san comes up with a ring and a couple balls to try to get Mimatsu-san to do a circus trick. Then, to some circus music, he does a juggling trick. Then they say their farewells and introduce Mochizuki-san, who introduces the next segment: the Question Corner.

The Question Corner begins with the person seated to the right of Fumina (probably a producer or director) asking for a "mini Eternal Sailor Moon" to come up. They find one in young fan Tamura Yui, who asks for the cast's birthdays, which they then give. The only highlights from this question are that Jupiter actress Ooyama Chiho and Pluto actress Kamiya Yuki have the same birthday and that Takagi Nao's birthday is the "same as the Sailor Moon musical's opening day," though since her birthday is June 10 and the performances for this musical started on July 10, I'm not sure if she means this musical or another one. Mochizuki-san (who's taking the questions) tells the girl that if she can't remember all those dates, she can watch the video.

The second question, asked by a fan named Konikawa Satoka who is cosplaying as a Starlight, is whether the Three Lights will come back. Mochizuki-san rolls over with laughter, and the man on Fumina's right puts his head on the table as if he was dreading this question. Mochizuki-san passes it on to the man on Fumina's right, who he calls Sai-san (it looks like Saitou Ryuutarou, the Executive Producer from Gaiden through Transylania no Mori) and Sai-san says that with the fans' support, "we might revive them" (which, of course, they did later, in Marina's stage). Enomoto-san (who's taking the fan's question in the crowd) says that the Three Lights might not come back and asks the fan to "cheer for us." The fan tells him to do his best.

The senshi sing 'Everlasting Moonlight'

The Question Corner is followed by a performance of the theme song for Shin Densetsu Kourin, "Everlasting Moonlight," by all the senshi cast, introduced by the two Yuutas. Interestingly, the pairing at the mikes seems to reflect canon relationships: Uranus and Neptune are together, as are Saturn and Pluto and Mercury and Mars. But that might just be a coincidence.

The fankan ends with a 1-chorus performance of "La Moon" by the senshi cast. I admit I was surprised to see a fankan that did not have "La Soldier" as its ending song. But then again, sometimes I feel like I've seen "La Soldier" a few too many times. Anyway, after this, the cast says goodbye, with an instrumental of "Everlasting Moonlight" seeing them off. The curtain opens a second time for a final bow, during which the Three Lights actresses along with Tiger's Eye and Fish Eye and the two Yuutas make an appearance.
