One year ago, the Sailor Senshi defeated Queen Beryl and saved the world. Now they can settle into a normal life and a fun summer vacation.
Or can they?
Unfortunately, the hatred still remaining on the planet revives Queen Beryl and her generals, the Shitennou. Now the senshi must reunite to defeat Beryl again at D Point when she captures Tuxedo Kamen again.
SONGS:
- “Mystery Sagashi” ("Mystery Search"): a song which the five Inners sing in Usagi’s dream. A longer version of it is used for the show’s curtain call.
- “Natsu no Shimashou Vacation” (“Let’s Have a Summer Vacation”): The girls sing about the great vacation they’re going to have (since Haruna-sensei just invited them to go abroad with her).
- “Bara no Himitsu” (“Secret of the Rose”): the token Tuxedo Kamen song for the myu. Usagi and the youmas sing bits of it too.
- “Waltz no Koi wo Nosete” (“Love on a Waltz”): a Serenity/Endymion duet (probably the only one in the myus). It is set to, appropriately, a waltz tune.
- “Namikimichi no Koi” (“Love on a Tree-Lined Street”): a solo by Minako where she sings about her first love.
- “Saikyou no Couple Gundan” (“The Strongest Couple Corps”): a song where Saitou Kun and his gymnastics teammates – really the Shitennou in disguise – each woo one of the Inners (except Usagi). It has a very Grease feel to it.
- “Onnanoko no Shinshou” (“The Real Truth About Girls"): Luna basically lectures Artemis about why his stereotypical views on women are wrong. It’s quite funny and my personal favorite of this myu.
- “Sailor War”: a song which would go on to become a major battle theme for the musicals. It’s sung here by all 5 senshi along with Luna and Artemis.
- “Yami Koso Utsukushii” (“Beautiful Darkness”): a song which later became a sort of Dark Kingdom theme, also appearing in 1998’s Shin Densetsu Kourin and 2003’s Starlights*Ryuusei Densetsu, with slight changes. Here it is sung by Beryl, the Shitennou, and the Dark Kingdom minions; in the other two versions Galaxia and her minions also sing.
- “La Soldier”: sung by the Senshi, Luna and Artemis. It is also used as a “service number” (encore) for this musical. “La Soldier” became a theme song for the musicals, appearing as a service number for every myu afterwards, and appearing in full in this myu, Shin Densetsu Kourin, and 2001’s Ankoku no Princess Black Lady.
TRIVIA
- Gaiden is the shortest myu, at only 1 hour, 17 minutes.
- This myu and its unreleased kaiteiban (revision) are the only musicals in which Luna and Artemis appear, or indeed actually exist.
- This myu introduces three of the longest-running senshi – Ooyama Anza as Moon, Morino Ayako as Mercury, and Suzuki Nana as Venus – as well as the longest-running Tuxedo Kamen and second longest-running myu performer, Mochizuki Yuuta (who plays Kunzite in this musical) and the longest-running Beryl, Nishina Yuri.
- Usagi is shown to have the power of dream premonition.
- Although this is set a year after the defeat of Beryl, Usagi doesn’t know about the Moon Kingdom or her past life – which doesn’t quite agree with the story of the Classic anime and manga arc.
- This myu is set some time after episode 62 of the anime and Act 14 of the manga, since the Inners have their Star Power henshins and Sailor Moon has her Crystal Power henshin, Cutie Moon Rod, and Moon Princess Halation attack.
- It is unknown how Minako knew Saitou for such a long time if he was really Kunzite. It could be that Saitou is meant to be a reference to Saijyo Ace, Minako’s love interest in the Codename: Sailor V manga, who was revealed to be Danburite of the Dark Agency, a sort of predecessor to the Dark Kingdom.
- While the other senshi are fighting the bad guys, Sailor Moon goes and frees Tuxedo Kamen – and no one, even the enemies, seems to notice!
- In this myu Tuxedo Kamen is hung on a cross. Crosses are used often in anime – including Sailor Moon – most likely because they are not as significant and controversial a symbol in Japan as in the U.S. A cross is also used in Transylvania no Mori; it can be seen at the end of the song "We'll Be the Last Victory."
- The omake for this myu features a performance of “La Soldier” by the Inner Senshi actresses in their school uniforms but sans wigs. Anza’s real hair has been put up in Usagi’s signature meatball ponytails for this performance, which looks kinda funny since her hair is shorter than Usagi’s. The performance took place on August 12, 1993, at the Yupou Postal Life Insurance Hall in Tokyo, where the first 10 performances of this musical took place.
- Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon, came to one of the rehearsals of this myu and felt fans would really enjoy it.
- Suzuki Nana (Venus) admits in the omake that she owns “the whole volume” of the Sailor Moon manga, meaning tankoubon (graphic novels) of the manga must’ve been available then.
